Solid Waste Services today announced tips for recycling during the holiday season. Whether you have curbside recycling or visit a drop-off location, many of your holiday trappings can be recycled by following the tips below:
• Wrapping paper and gift boxes can be recycled as mixed paper; • Holiday cards can be recycled as mixed paper unless they have foil on the card or envelope; • Do not recycle bows, ribbons, foil or plastic gift wrap, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and tissue paper; • Do not recycle plastic blisterpack or clamshell packaging; • Remove plastic lining from boxes before recycling the boxes; • Remove any non-paper handles from gift bags before recycling; • Some tape is okay but please remove excessive tape; • Be sure to break down boxes to save space. Flattening gift wrap also will help stretch the space in your curbside recycling cart; • Gift wrap and gift boxes also can be recycled at the 5th Avenue Mall between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4 and you will get a Alaska Ace’s game ticket voucher for use at any home game during the regular season. Military Reception Held Before Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony Friday event to honor military members and their families
Military members and their families will be the special guests at a reception planned in their honor from 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Friday, November 28 at the Voth Theater of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. The event will be held prior to the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Town Square which begins at 5:30 p.m.
Organized by AT&T and The First Lady’s Military & Family Support Initiative, the fourth annual event will feature music, food, a magician, art’s and crafts for the kids, caroling and more. Dozens of knitted items donated by the community will be handed out to military families. Special presentations will be given by Mayor Mark Begich, AT&T President Mike Felix, Anchorage’s First Lady Deborah Bonito, and other guests.
“This is a small gesture we can make to our service men and women and their families to show how much we appreciate their service to our country,” said Anchorage First Lady Deborah Bonito. “We are grateful for the support of AT&T and the many individuals and volunteers who make this event possible.”
