    Carbon Monoxide the Silent Killer
    Tuesday | December 30, 2008

Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer because it is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. Carbon monoxide, otherwise known as CO is a product of incomplete combustion. “The only way to know you are breathing this oxygen depriving gas is through carbon monoxide detection”, said Ron Kunda, Fire Marshal.

Dr. Ben Roller, Medical Director, St. Alexius Emergency Room, says that “We see patients who are victims of carbon monoxide poisoning and more so during the wintertime with the cold temperatures. Carbon monoxide is a gas that is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-irritating. Therein lies the problem.” “By the time you realize there’s a problem you are already confused and must be led out of the situation”, said Dr. Roller. “All it takes is about 15-20 minutes of exposure to go from nausea, vomiting, and headache to the point of unconsciousness, organ failure and even death depending on the concentration of carbon monoxide.” Dr. Roller recommends using carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and in the workplace. “They are your eyes to warn you that there’s a problem,” said Dr. Roller. “Be warned and be prepared”, continued Dr. Roller.

Here are some things you can do to protect yourself and other loved ones.

    1. First, install a UL approved CO detector on every level of your home, making sure one is by the bedrooms.
    2. Test the detectors monthly and change the batteries every six months.
    3. If the CO detector alarms check it for proper operation, get everyone out leaving windows and exterior doors closed. (Call 911)
